Naaiz inspires Maldives to a colossal victory

Maldives have finished off an unsuccessful AFC Asian Cup qualification campaign with a resounding 7-0 win over Bhutan.

Petar Segrt's home debut could not have gone any better. Maldives came into the match after a friendly loss against Singapore and Segrt fielded a young starting 11. Mohamed Faisal started in goal and was protected by a back four of Ali Samooh, Captain Akram Abdul Gani. Hussain Sifaau made his debut as right full back and Mohamed Mujtaaz filled the left full back position.

Mohamed Irufaan and Arif (baka) who returned to National duty after more than two years filled the central midfield positions while Ibrahim Waheed Hassan played as attacking midfielder and Hamza Mohamed, Hassan Naaiz and Ali Fasir occupied the three positions upfront.

Most notable absentee from the starting 11 for Maldives was Mohamed Umair while Ibrahim Mahudhee who impressed against Singapore was also in the bench.

Maldives went off to a good start and had a chance to take the lead from the spot but Ali Fasir failed to convert. This was Sentey's second penalty miss in the last few weeks. He also missed an important penalty for New Radiant against Eagles in Male' league.

Soon after Sentey's club mate Hamza Mohamed fired home from inside the box to draw first blood. Hampu's shot found the far corner of the net as Maldives went into half time with a one goal lead.

It was in the second half that Maldives found their feet. Hassan Naaiz (Dhaadhu) grabed his first hat-trick in national colors. Dhaadhu also added one more to his name as he completed a double brace with four goals.

Former team-mate of Dhaadhu Ibrahim Waheed Hassan taped in from close range after his club mate Ibrahim Mahudhee Hassan (feydhoo Ibbe) found him.

Maldives goal thrilling game came deep into stoppage time as full back Hussain Sifaau's cross was deflacted into the back of the Bhutan net as the Dragon boys had yet another away day to forget.

AFC Asian Cup qualification came to an end with tonight's fixture being the last game of group D. Maldives finished the group in third place with six points while Oman and Palestine finished level on points with both Middle Easter Nation's sharing 15 points. Oman took home top spot in the group thanks to a better goal difference.
