Warm Session: Passing and Finishing

Coaching Sessions: For senior level this is just a warm-up exercise.

(For Youth players this can be used as a passing and finishing drill)

– Playing Area

  • Half pitch

– No of Players

  • not more than 7 players per station (depending on Intensity) plus two goal keepers

– Equipment

  • balls
  • markers and cones
  • goal

– Sequence of practice

  • a player is assigned to each marker as shown (the first marker has the rest of the players)
  • player passes to the player on the marker and runs to the marker.
  • the player receiving the ball moves forward slightly to receive and pass to the next marker. As the first player, he runs and replaces the player he passed to.
  • in the third pass the player passes to the player and striker position and moves to make the cross first before replacing the striker.
  • in the fourth pass the player in striker position judges the run of the winger and plays through the cones and sprints to finish (6) the cross (which is pas 5) in one touch (header if high ball)
  • after finishing the striker collects the ball and moves to the other station. so players move on both side (use of both legs helpful)

– Progression

  • once mastered try to play with one touch football

– Coaching points

  • inside foot pass (refer to Coaching Points of Basic Passing)
  • receive the ball in space so as to pass with the next step
  • communicate with each other. For those players slow in understanding help him by giving instructions.
  • control the speed (weight) of the ball (not too fast not too slow - remember a pass is successful when both the passer and receiver are successful)
  • in the pass between the cones, play the ball for the crosser to cross from one touch .
  • also refer to Coaching Points for Cross and Heading
  • concentration
